Kite

Kite (Dr. Suzanne Kite) is an Oglála Lakȟóta artist whose scholarship and artistic practice engages with contemporary Lakȟóta philosophy through research-creation, computational media, and performance. Often working in collaboration with family and community members, her highly interdisciplinary practice is most recently focused on body interfaces for machine learning driven performance, as well as sculptures and interactive installations generated by dreams.  

Kite’s recent solo exhibitions include Wičháȟpi Owihaŋke Waníča Kiŋ (Infinite Collapsing Star), Bockley Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; Kite and Wíhaŋble S’a Center: Dreaming with AI, Museum of Contemporary Native Art, Sante Fe, NM; and List Projects 31: Kite, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA (all 2025). Recent biennial presentations include the Thailand Biennale Phuket, Paiz Art Biennale, and Shanghai Biennale. A selection of recent group exhibitions include All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace, REDCAT, Los Angeles, CA (2024); The Land Wants You, Whitney Biennial film program, New York City, NY (2024); Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969, CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY (2023); and Who can think, what can think, Te Tuhi, Auckland, Aotearoa (2023). Kite’s performances have recently been hosted by Center for Art, Research, and Alliances (CARA) at the 36th Bienal de São Paolo; House of World Cultures (HKW), Berlin; Serpentine Gallery, London; Remai Modern, Saskatoon; and Vera List Center, New York City. 

Kite’s research is widely published including in The Journal of Design and Science (MIT Press), with the award winning article, “Making Kin with Machines,” co-authored with Jason Lewis, Noelani Arista, and Archer Pechawis (2018). Recent awards include the Creative Capital Award, Forge Fellowship, and USA Fellow Award (all 2023), and Creative Time Open Call (with Alisha B. Wormsley) (2022–2023). 

Kite holds a BFA in music composition from California Institute of Arts, Los Angeles, CA; an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; and a PhD in Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal. Currently at Bard College, she is Codirector of Abundant Intelligences, Director of Wihanble S’a Lab, Distinguished Artist in Residence, and Assistant Professor of American and Indigenous Studies. Kite is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
