Dyani White Hawk to Feature in Art21 “Between Worlds”

Season 12 of Art21’s Art in the Twenty-First Century spotlights Dyani White Hawk’s practice alongside those of Sophie Calle, Lubaina Himid, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen.

“Between Worlds” explores how each of the artists’ practices engages with histories of colonization, their unique cultural positionalities, and our shared responsibilities to each other and the world we live in. White Hawk’s segment sees her viewing Indigenous artworks in storage in the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collection. Her mixed media works draw on histories of Indigenous abstraction as seen in beadwork, quillwork, and weaving, foregrounding these practices alongside what Western art history typically terms “modern art.”

“Between Worlds” is directed by Bryan Chang and the Meerkat Media Collective production team, series produced by Nick Ravich, and curated by Tina Kukielski and Jurrell Lewis. It premieres on Friday, October 17 at 10pm ET on PBS. An advanced screening will take place at Art21’s biennial film festival, Art21 at the Movies, on October 10.

Artworks featured in the episode will be on view in Dyani White Hawk: Love Language, opening at the Walker Art Center on October 18, 2025. Bringing together works from the past 15 years of White Hawk’s career, the exhibition is co-organized by the WAC and the Remai Modern, Saskatoon.
