The Healing of Visiting by Dyani White Hawk

Dyani White Hawk is featured in the The Minnesota Star Tribune for her latest work, Visiting, a ten foot columnar sculpture created in homage to Great Lakes region Anishnabeg artists George Morrison (Grand Portage Ojibwe, 1919-2000) and Jim Denomie (Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior, 1955-2022).

The article by Jenna Ross gives an intimate look into White Hawk’s studio and the making of Visiting, which is titled after an intergenerational practice of togetherness and exchange across Native communities and tribes, such as in the works’ becoming. Enacting a crazy quilt methodology, beaded strips uniquely designed and loomed by White Hawk’s expansive studio community come together, vibrating as a cohesive, iridescent patchwork.

Visiting was first exhibited at The Armory Show in New York (September 6-8, 2024) and is currently exhibited in Together: Leslie Smith III & Dyani White Hawk at Bockley Gallery (September 20 – November 2, 2024).
