Andrea Carlson (Ojibwe) has been named one of 63 recipients of 2022 USA Fellowship awards, an honor that recognizes these artists “remarkable artistic vision and their commitment to community small and large.” The Chicago-based Carlson will receive a no-strings-attached award of $50,000 and a year of financial planning assistance.

This year’s recipients—working in architecture and design, craft, dance, film, media, music, theater and performance, traditional arts, visual art, and writing—represents “a growing commitment to elevating and amplifying underrepresented voices.”

“Twenty percent of the honorees are native and Indigenous artists, and 17% are disabled individuals—the largest number of both groups in the nonprofit’s 16-year history,” writes the Los Angeles Timess Deborah Vankin. “Most of the honorees in the architecture and design category identify as people of color.”
